Last year in McMinnville, only 12 High School girls went to this Career Fair.  Two years ago Cascade participated on the last day with a booth on the “Careers for Women Day”.  This year United Steelworkers Local 8378 is trying to get support to fill a 55 student bus with girls from Media Arts & Communications Academy (MACA) and McMinnville High School (MHS).

To qualify, individuals must experience a COBRA qualifying event that is the involuntary termination of a covered employee's employment. The involuntary termination must occur during the period that began September 1, 2008 and ends on February 28, 2010.

Cascade Steel cuts another 17 jobs

McMinnville's Cascade Steel Rolling Mills is about to embark on its fifth round of layoffs in a little more than a year, President Jeff Dyck confirmed Tuesday in response to a union press release.

Management at the mill, one of the largest employers in Yamhill County, notified the United Steelworkers that it plans to lay off an additional 17 union workers Sunday.

Wauna Mill Lays Off 15 Workers

Layoffs will come from labor pool; union offered alternatives, but company declined Starting this week, 15 workers will be laid off from Georgia-Pacific's Wauna Mill for an extended period. The layoffs will come from the labor pool, a group of workers who fill vacancies as needed in a variety of jobs at the mill. Kristi Ward, public affairs manager for the company, said it's the first time in "many years" the mill has had to impose involuntary layoffs.

New STEELWORKERS

On Thursday the workers at CRT Processing in Clackamas voted 16-8 to become STEELWORKERS. Congratulations to them and special thanks to District 12 Organizer Pete Passerelli for all his work on this.  Also, thanks for the support of Senator Merkley's Labor Liaison and the members of 7150, 6163 and Blue Oregon.  Good luck in negotiations.
